Prairiwind Havanese

Havanese Temperament

The Havanese is truly one of the most delightful of the small breeds. They are exceptionally intelligent and quick-witted. Their love of attention comes from their adorable little "show-off" natures. They are curious and busy constantly. They are natural clowns and enjoy interludes of rowdy, madcap play.

They never let strangers approach unwelcomed. They thrive on human companionship, and are at their best as a participating member of the family. They love children and will play tirelessly with them at any game in which children delight. The Havanese is a good breed for first-time dog owners and for families with young children, and he is smart and agile enough for those who want a small dog for obedience or agility competitions. He does well in multiple-dog households, for he is not a scrapper, and he's a delightful apartment dog because he's easy to train and not noisy.

The Havanese dog has a toy stature, sturdy build, gentle temperament, and easy going nature. Havanese dogs were bred to be companions. Because of their great desire to please their masters, they are easily trainable dogs. If their antics receive a chuckle once, they’re bound to try it over and over just to keep their owner laughing. Havanese dogs are an excellent choice for families. They get along with children well and are generally instant friends with any stranger. They also enjoy the company of a wide variety of animals.

They are an easy going breed and extremely accepting of a wide variety of personalities, life styles, situations, and activities. While diminutive in size, these dogs are big on intelligence and sociability. The Havanese's expression tells you that they miss nothing going on around them; they love to sit somewhere high - especially on the back of sofas and chairs. While not timid, they are not quarrelsome or aggressive either.

Havanese typically become very attached to the families of which they are members. Havanese enjoy being in the center of things, and generally make very playful pets. Because they enjoy the company of people and are a naturally intelligent breed, they are highly trainable and pick up new tricks quickly. They are also naturally curious, and will investigate strange sights and sounds, but prefer to focus most of their curiosity on the lives of their owners. Since they become highly attached to their people and are inquisitive, they make natural watchdogs.

So, if you’re looking for a small, even-tempered, highly intelligent and trainable dog that requires regular attention from its owner, then the Havanese may be the right breed for you
